About Your Schlumbergera White
Congratulations — you are now the proud owner of a Schlumbergera White, commonly known as a Christmas Cactus. Just when the days are shortest and the garden is resting, this beautiful plant bursts into a cascade of pure white flowers, bringing a little winter brightness to your home. Unlike desert cacti, Schlumbergera are forest plants, so they enjoy a little more water and humidity than their spiky cousins. With the right care, your plant can flower year after year and may even produce a second flush of blooms in spring.
When Your Plant First Arrives
Your Schlumbergera has been carefully packaged for its journey, but give it a little time to settle before making any changes. Follow these simple first steps:
- Unpack gently — remove all packaging and check the plant over. A little bud or flower drop after transit can happen and is nothing to worry about.
- Find a bright spot — place it somewhere with bright, indirect light, away from radiators and cold draughts.
- Check the compost — feel the top of the compost before watering. If it feels dry, give it a thorough drink and allow the excess to drain away.
- Let it settle — avoid moving or repotting your plant unnecessarily while it adjusts to its new home, especially once flower buds have formed.
Watering
Although it is a cactus, Schlumbergera is native to humid forest habitats and prefers a little more moisture than a desert cactus. Allow the top couple of centimetres of compost to dry before watering again, then water thoroughly and let the excess drain freely. Never leave the pot standing in water.
During flowering, try to keep the watering routine steady rather than allowing the compost to become completely dry for long periods. After flowering, reduce watering slightly while your plant has a short rest, but do not let it remain dry for weeks at a time. Check the compost before each watering, as your plant will need less water in the darker, cooler months.
Light
Schlumbergera White enjoys bright, indirect light. A bright windowsill with some gentle morning or evening sunshine is ideal, but protect it from strong midday or afternoon sun, particularly through glass, as this can bleach or scorch the foliage. Turn the pot occasionally to encourage even growth.
Temperature & Humidity
Your Christmas Cactus is happiest in a comfortable household temperature between 15–21°C. Keep it away from radiators, fires, cold draughts and sudden changes in temperature. During autumn, cooler nights can help encourage flowering, but protect the plant from frost and temperatures below around 10°C.
Average household humidity is usually adequate, although your plant will appreciate a little extra moisture in a centrally heated home. Group it with other houseplants or place it near a tray of damp pebbles, making sure the base of the pot is not sitting in the water. There is no need to mist the flowers directly.
Encouraging Flowering
To encourage the next display of flowers, give your Schlumbergera around 12–14 hours of darkness each night for four to six weeks in early autumn, along with cooler evening temperatures. A room that naturally becomes darker and cooler at night is often enough. Once buds have formed, avoid moving or turning the plant suddenly, as changes in light, temperature or position can cause the buds to drop.
Feeding
Feed your Schlumbergera with a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser every two to four weeks during spring and summer, following the instructions on the bottle. Feeding after flowering supports fresh growth and helps the plant build energy for its next display. Reduce and then pause feeding in autumn and winter while it is preparing to flower.
Pruning and Shaping
Remove faded flowers gently once the display is over. If you would like a bushier, more branching plant, you can pinch or twist off one or two leaf segments from the ends of stems in spring. This encourages new branches and more potential flowering points. Avoid heavy pruning, and always handle the segments gently as they can snap at the joints.
Repotting
Schlumbergera is happy to be slightly snug in its pot, so repot only when the roots have filled the container or the compost is drying out unusually quickly. Spring, after flowering, is the best time. Choose a pot with drainage holes that is only slightly larger than the current one, and use a free-draining compost suitable for cacti or houseplants with some added perlite or grit.
A Little Help If Things Go Wrong
- Buds dropping — this can happen after a sudden change in temperature, light or position, or if the plant has been moved once buds have formed. Keep it in a steady spot and maintain consistent watering.
- Wrinkled or limp segments — check whether the compost is very dry. If it is, water thoroughly and allow the excess to drain. If the compost is wet, the roots may be struggling with too much moisture.
- Yellow or mushy segments — this is often linked to overwatering or poor drainage. Let the compost dry further between waterings and make sure the pot can drain freely.
- No flowers — your plant may need brighter indirect light, cooler autumn nights, or a longer period of darkness before flowering season.
- Small pests or fine webbing — inspect the stems and leaf joints regularly. Wipe away pests and treat promptly with a suitable houseplant pest-control product if needed.
